A Change Would Do You Good

1 08 2012

It’s butterfly season in my garden.  Tiger swallowtails flash their finery against the deep blue violet of buddleia bushes. Not too long ago, these jewel-winged beauties were just fat little green caterpillars, chewing their way through foliage like there was no tomorrow, which, in a way, was true.

Something – perhaps a feeling that something scary was happening – made Caterpillar build a chrysalis, wrapping itself inside a safe fortress of its own design and construction.  Then, when the time was right, when there was no longer need for that defense, Butterfly shook off the confines of the chrysalis – it had been a safe place to make enormous changes, but it was time to break free of it.

We build our own chrysalises from time to time.  We all need to feel safe and protected, especially when we are working on making some changes in our lives, but if we do not, when the time is right – and we know when it’s right – break out of our intellectual armor, it becomes a straightjacket.

Thanks, Caterpillar, for reminding us that it’s okay to take cover.

Thanks, Butterfly for showing us, when we leave the chrysalis, we can spread our wings.

Sometimes I look back and wonder how I got to who I am, may I do that for the rest of my life
