Who Do You Think You Are?

“So, what do you do?”

How many times have you been asked this vapid excuse for a conversation starter? It presumes that you can be summed up by the title some human resources department has laid on you. Stay-at-home-moms, it can make you feel virtually invisible. It should be banned from polite conversation.

How about asking, “What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?” or “Which Muppet do you like best?”  Ask something that does not have a correct answer – even better, no pre-rehearsed answer – and odds are you will either generate a lively conversation or, at least, avoid a waste of time.

Life does not last forever (although some social interactions may feel like it.)  We should remember that we are important. We should respect our true selves, not allow our titles to define or limit us. Know there are others who need us – our love, our strength, our humor, our counsel, our dignity, our criticism, our courage.  Share with them. Don’t waste any precious real human resources small-talking about your “label.”

Who do you think you are?

To the best of my ability, I want to be a good friend. That’s an important job on this earth.
